This relief panel depicts the Buddha's passing away (mahāparinirvāna).

The Buddha is reclining on a bed with legs shaped like lion and elephants. The senior disciple Mahakassapa stands with a staff at the Buddha’s feet. On his right stands a naked ascetic. A tree-spirit, seen in the foliage on the upper left, shares in the lamentation.

The new disciple Subhadra sits serenely meditating with his robe drawn over his head at the bottom of the relief next to Vajrapani who sprawls beneath the bier striking his head in despair.Behind the death-bed are the five Malla princes expressing great emotion. A tree-spirit (‘yakshi'’), seen in the foliage of a sala tree, shares in the lamentation. The tree alludes to the Upavartana grove of the Malla nobles at Kusinagara (near Gorakhpur). 

Life of the Buddha – Mahāparinirvāna 涅槃圖

This is the lower section of a larger relief depicting the parinirvāna of the Buddha. Mourning figures are at the foot of the bed where the Buddha lies. The folds of the bed drape the background. Vajradhara is collapsed on the floor in deep distress on the far left. His left arm is raised dramatically over his head while his vajra lies abandoned at his side. Another figure is supporting him. Beyond Vajradhara is a mustached disciple with one hand on the heart and the other reaching up in a show of emotion. Next to the mustached disciple is a top-knotted figure with head bowed in his weeping. Subhadra, in contrast, sits quietly in meditation, a wanderers bundle on a tripod nearby. 

此圖為佛傳浮雕涅槃圖殘存的局部,描繒佛陀入滅時景象,目前僅存座下的舉哀弟子,屬常見犍陀羅的佛傅涅樂圖之一。畫面以床座上垂下的敷巾為背景。畫面最左端的執金剛神悲傷倒地,左臂高舉過頭,右手支地,所持的金剛杵遺落在旁,表現哀傷逾恆的樣貌,旁有另一人扶持著。另一位弟子蹲地撫胸仰望,強調對佛入涅槃深切的不捨與哀慟。一似婆羅門的人物低首掩面哭泣,而佛陀最後的弟子須跋陀羅則安詳地結跏跌坐在一旁入定,最右端有三根木棒懸掛漉水囊,表現其行者的身分。作品中人物表情、衣著樣式等均刻劃寫實。
