Portrayed here may be a miracle recounted in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra. When the Buddha was in deep meditation inside a sandalwood pavilion, he performed a miracle and emitted a bright light. Wherever the light shone, thousands of lotuses and Buddha images were manifested. 

An alternative interpretation is that this sculpture represents one of the miracles at Sravasti where Sakyamuni Buddha multiplied his body infinitely, filling all space with Buddhas expounding the Dharma. The Buddha sits in meditation on a lotus throne beneath a canopy in the relief. Radiating aslant on either side are six individualized Buddha images standing on rudimentary lotus pedestals. Male and female kneeling figures on the lower right and left may be the donors of this work. 

據《大方等如來藏經》載:「爾時世尊於旃檀重閣,正坐三昧而現神變,有千葉蓮花大如車輪,其數無量色香具足而未開敷,一切花內皆有化佛,上升虛空彌覆世界猶如寶帳,一一蓮花放無量光,一切蓮花同時舒榮。」此作即刻劃經典所述之景。

佛陀結跏跌坐於蓮座上結禪定印,閉目冥思進入禪定三味,頭頂上雕華蓋。此圖構圖特殊之處,在於兩側則各三尊化佛立於蓮台上及一位胡跪合掌的人物,採左右對稱放射狀排列,表現經文所述佛於禪定中,放射光芒並出現了許多蓮花與化佛的情景。下方胡跪的世俗人物,推測應是王宮朝臣,表現的可能是佛陀為折服外道,在舍衛城施顯神變的故事。
